The party was down in Springvale, over an hour's drive. We rode in a friend's car that had no AC - and of course it was a hot summer day. Great day for an outside party - not a great day for a four-tier cake to drive an hour with no AC. By the time we reached our destination, the cake was falling apart. Ironically, it was the pretend melted ice cream cones that really did melt and start falling off the cake. I knew that I had to come up with something, and no amount of re-positioning the cones was going to help. I ended up scratching the bottom two layers, and only bringing out the top two. No one knew the difference, and we still served the bottom two layers, so there was plenty of cake for everyone. I was really disappointed in how it turned out, but I was thankful that we were able to come up with a plan B. And most importantly, the cake was for some friends of ours and they were happy with it regardless. It was a lesson in patience and grace for me. Those are not always easy lessons to learn, but necessary, in order to become the best person you can be.
It made me question my ability as a cake decorator, but I know there are only so many things we have control over, and the rest we just have to leave up to God. He knows what He is doing, and we have to trust that He causes all things to work out for good. I have learned that I must always have AC in the summer if I am transporting a cake. I have learned to put the cake together once we actually reach our destination if I am driving further than 30 minutes. I have learned that sometimes things happen, and being able to see past the unpleasant circumstances to come up with a good back up plan is what makes this a great job for me.
